I stepped into the lady’s compartment of the 7.09 Virar-Churchgate local on the first morning of my work.
In Mumbai they say that if you have travelled by this jam-packed train, then you can survive anywhere.
Every halt brought more ladies into the compartment.
A few disembarked, but many boarded. Some of them were accompanied by infants and children too.
Alighting at Churchgate I melted into the ocean of men and women, grinning with satisfaction at my first shift. It had made me the proud owner of two purses, a set of golden bangles, and a silver anklet.
